Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care

“A safe student is a happy student and a happy student can learn…”

Effective Pastoral Care, where students are made to feel safe, goes a long way to promoting a positive whole school environment where students can strive to be bold and courageous.

Emphasis is placed on providing literacy and numeracy but this process is underpinned by the strong pastoral support across all year levels in small groups where the student/teacher ratio allows for students' individual needs to be met.

The health, wellbeing and safety of students is measured and managed through careful monitoring using a College Pastoral Care system that is couched in the Homeroom or classroom system, the Curriculum and the House system.

At Geelong Baptist College, we provide support to all of our students to help them realise their full learning potential, both Curricular and Co-curricular.

We aim to provide a flexible and understanding environment to enhance the learning and overall development of our students.

The  Homeroom/ classroom teachers, oversee Pastoral Care programs within each Year Group in the College. This is done in liaison with the Principal, the Careers Advisors, the Chaplain and the  Curriculum Coordinators.

The foundation for Pastoral Care lies within the Homeroom / classroom system. Each teacher is available for consultation with students who may have questions or are experiencing difficulties. The Homeroom / classroom teacher will also be the contact person when a student's progress (behavioural, academic, or social)  requires monitoring.

The Homeroom / classroom teacher is the person responsible for liaison with parents and other teachers in regard to individual students within that Homeroom group or Primary class.

Geelong Baptist College has an experienced and reputable Chaplain. The Chaplain's role is to support and understand issues facing students and to adopt a consistent follow up approach with each individual student.  The Chaplain may address any one or all of the following areas:

  • Emotional issues.
  • Social issues.
  • Family issues.

Extended Pastoral Care

This element is designed to underpin the Pastoral care

mechanisims within the Secondary College.

One lesson a week is dedicated to meeting the specific needs of each year group within the College.

The developmental stage of students is considered when tailoring specific programs or topics to each year group. The design of this program also eliminates the attrition of valuable teaching time while assemblies and cultural activities are taking place.
